Project: Center for Crisis Early Warning
How do innovative methods contribute to early crisis detection?
The Center for Crisis Early Warning develops application-oriented, data-based methods for the early detection of international crises and conflicts.
We support the Center with consulting, media and editorial design – from roll-ups to research publications.

Quantitative early crisis detection
The Center for Crisis Early Warning (CCEW) is based at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. Here, researchers from the fields of data science and political and social sciences work together to develop novel methodological and conceptual approaches to data-driven early crisis detection.
These approaches to data-based prediction of future developments using statistical models, algorithms and artificial intelligence are also referred to as ‘predictive analytics’. Using these methods, extensive, unstructured data sets can thus be evaluated quickly and continuously. In early crisis detection, predictive analytics help to identify warning signs at an early stage and enable informed decisions to be made.
This means that the findings of the CCEW also benefit practical applications: in addition to its scientific work, the Center also has the task of supporting the federal ministries involved in predicting and assessing crises and conflicts.
Clear design for complex issues
The Centre for Crisis Early Warning uses innovative methods to bring clarity to large amounts of data. The editorial design we developed reflects this clarity of content, as well as the progressive nature of the methodology and the urgency of the subject matter.
A uniform title motif that radiates modernity, complexity and depth was used to create a high recognition effect. This makes the publications of the CCEW clearly recognisable and easy to identify.
The colour orange was chosen to match the corporate colour of the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, thus conveying the CCEW’s affiliation with UniBW. Orange, a mixture of red and yellow, attracts attention and symbolises danger on the one hand, representing the explosive nature of the research topics and results. On the other hand, orange has a warm, connecting and optimistic effect, which stands for the positive impact of the research work.
The sans serif font used for titles and headings creates clarity. The serif font used for the body text supports readability and quick absorption of the content. Graphics in a colour spectrum ranging from turquoise to blue provide an effective contrast to the accent colour orange and underline the requirement for clarity in the illustrations.
CCEW publications appear in German or English. We also edit and proofread the texts in both languages.
